Biden Hits Rock Bottom

A recent survey by Monmouth University indicates a significant dip in President Joe Biden’s approval ratings, reaching a new low since his inauguration.

The survey reveals that only 34% of participants endorse Biden’s performance, contrasting with a 61% disapproval rate. This decline is evident across various groups, with Democratic support for Biden falling to 74% from previous highs of 80% in September and 88% in July. Among independents, approval has decreased to 24%, a drop from 30% in September and 38% in July. Republican support remains low at 5%, as per the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

The latest Monmouth poll, unveiled on Monday, highlights substantial dissatisfaction with Biden’s management in several key policy areas:

  • Immigration: Disapproval at 69%
  • Inflation: Disapproval at 68%
  • Climate change: Disapproval at 54%
  • Unemployment: Disapproval at 53%
  • Transportation and energy infrastructure: Disapproval at 52%

On immigration, the Democratic base appears divided, with 50% supporting Biden’s approach, while 47% express discontent.

The American populace is notably concerned with Biden’s handling of economic issues, particularly inflation. Only a meager 12% of Americans perceive an improvement in their financial situation, while 44% struggle to maintain their current status, and 43% consider themselves financially stable.

Comparatively, during Donald Trump’s presidency pre-COVID-19, the percentage of Americans facing financial struggles fluctuated between 20% and 29%, with those reporting financial improvement varying between 20% and 25%.

Patrick Murray, Director of MUPI, comments, “While the Biden administration highlights infrastructure investments and various positive economic indicators, the reality of heightened post-pandemic inflation is heavily impacting Americans. This is a significant factor shaping public opinion.”

Murray also cautions against the political risks of a narrative that contradicts people’s personal experiences.

Further insights from the Monmouth poll show that only 31% of Americans believe Biden is sufficiently addressing their family’s key issues. This sentiment is echoed by 11% of Republicans and 25% of independents.

Murray observes, “Partisanship undoubtedly influences people’s perception of their financial circumstances, which partly depends on the current administration. However, a considerable segment of Biden’s own party is also yearning for more attention to their primary concerns.”

This survey, conducted via telephone from November 30 to December 4, 2023, involved 803 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percentage points.
