Biden: US Pushing for Hostage Deal, Though ‘No Expectation’

The United States is actively facilitating negotiations for a potential new deal between Israel and Hamas regarding hostages, though President Joe Biden remains cautious about immediate prospects. During his visit to Milwaukee, Biden informed reporters, “There’s no expectation at this moment, but we are actively pursuing it.”

John Kirby, the National Security Council’s Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House, emphasized the gravity of these discussions on Tuesday. He stated, “Our efforts to broker another deal are ongoing and intense, involving potential humanitarian pauses and further aid.”

He further explained, “While we’re dedicated to making headway every day, both on the ground and from Washington, there’s no indication that an agreement is forthcoming. This was a key topic for [National Security Adviser] Jake [Sullivan] during his recent trip to the region – assessing the feasibility and proximity of reaching a new agreement.”

Kirby added, “Recent discussions among the negotiators have been happening, and we’re optimistic that they’ll lead to positive outcomes. However, I cannot commit to a specific timeline for reaching another agreement. Our focus remains on diligently working towards this goal.”
