Biden Uses Final SOTU as On-the-Job Interview to Allay 2nd-Term Fears

President Joe Biden used his State of the Union address Thursday to urge voters to reject “resentment, revenge, and retribution,” while making his case for a second term amidst a dispirited electorate. He also warned against GOP front-runner Donald Trump, portraying him as a dangerous alternative.

Delivered just eight months before Biden stands for reelection, his speech from the House rostrum served as an on-the-job interview for the nation’s oldest president. Biden sought to address concerns about his age and job performance while emphasizing the contrast with his likely November rival. He criticized his predecessor for not standing by American allies abroad and for embracing antidemocratic ideas in the U.S.

Biden appealed for Congress to support Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself against Russia’s invasion, stressing the importance of upholding freedom and democracy. He highlighted his administration’s accomplishments on infrastructure and manufacturing, pushing for more aid to Ukraine, tougher migration rules, and lower drug prices. Biden also reminded voters of the challenges he inherited when he entered office in 2021 amid a pandemic and a contracting economy.

The president aimed to deliver his message with vigor and command, showcasing his combative side and seeking to needle Republicans over positions he believes are out of step with the country. Biden faced a historically ineffective Congress, with legislators struggling to approve funding bills and deadlocked on foreign assistance bills for Ukraine and Israel.

The State of the Union address offers presidents a direct line to lawmakers and viewers at home, but its significance has diminished over time. Biden hoped for viral moments to clarify the choice for voters, while Speaker Mike Johnson urged Republicans to show decorum during the speech. Congressional Republican leaders showcased Sen. Katie Britt in the rebuttal to contrast with Biden’s generational gap.

Biden painted an upbeat future for the country, warning that progress is fragile and vulnerable if Trump returns to the White House. Trump planned to respond in real time on his Truth Social platform.

The speech came amid heightened emotions over Biden’s backing for Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. Biden announced plans to establish a temporary port on the Gaza coast to increase aid flow and urged lawmakers to pass defense assistance for Ukraine amidst ammunition shortages.

Biden also addressed access to abortion and fertility treatments, promising to restore Roe v. Wade if Americans support a Congress that upholds the right to choose. He raised concerns about “shrinkflation” and “junk fees” while unveiling an expanded plan to raise corporate taxes and cut taxes for the middle class.

With low approval ratings and doubts about his mental capability, Biden faces challenges in shoring up his standing. Following the speech, he planned campaign travel while his Cabinet spreads his message across the country.
