DeSantis Slams Newsom – Dems Furious

In the upcoming televised debate on Thursday night, GOP presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis will face off against California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, in a strategic move aimed at showcasing his readiness to challenge President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.

The debate against Newsom, a significant supporter of Biden and a potential future presidential candidate, provides DeSantis with an opportunity to draw a stark contrast between his conservative principles and the Democrats’ more progressive platform, setting the stage for what could be a glimpse into the debates of the 2024 general election.

For DeSantis, the governor of Florida, this debate represents a critical and risky maneuver, as noted by Republican analysts. With the Republican nomination process beginning in Iowa on January 15, DeSantis is currently trailing behind the leading candidate, former President Donald Trump, in the polls. A strong performance against Newsom, known for his debating prowess and aiming to boost his national recognition, is crucial for DeSantis.

Republican campaign veteran Charlie Gerow emphasized the significance of this debate for DeSantis, noting the potential impact of any missteps at such a pivotal moment before the Iowa nominating contest.

Scheduled to last 90 minutes and moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity, the debate in Georgia at 9 p.m. ET will underscore the divergent governance styles of DeSantis and Newsom.

While DeSantis is preparing for another debate with his Republican opponents in Alabama, his team has highlighted the importance of the upcoming debate with Newsom. DeSantis’ campaign manager, James Uthmeier, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to contrast DeSantis’ vision with what he termed Newsom’s ‘blueprint for failure.’

Newsom’s camp expressed surprise at DeSantis’ acceptance of the debate challenge, with adviser Nathan Click commenting on the strategic move by the DeSantis campaign amidst a tumultuous campaign period.

DeSantis, once perceived as a strong contender against Trump, has faced challenges within his campaign, including internal conflicts and a struggle to attract Trump’s base.

The Trump campaign has not provided any statements regarding this debate.

Republican experts view this debate as a critical chance for DeSantis to make an impression, despite it possibly being seen as a diversion by some. Lagging more than 40 points behind Trump in national polls and in a close race with Nikki Haley in Iowa and New Hampshire, DeSantis is in need of a defining moment.

John Feehery, a Republican strategist not working with any campaign, pointed out that DeSantis needs to demonstrate his capability to effectively engage with liberal opponents in debate.
