Harvard President Resigns For Scandal, Keeps $900k Per Year?

Former Harvard President Claudine Gay, who resigned amid allegations of academic plagiarism and controversy surrounding her congressional testimony on antisemitism, will continue to receive a substantial salary, amounting to nearly $900,000, according to the New York Post. Despite her resignation, Gay will return to Harvard’s faculty as a political science professor while retaining her generous compensation.

Gay, who had served as a professor of government at Harvard since 2006, earned $879,079 as a Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean in 2021, as reported by university records. Her expected salary upon returning to the faculty is anticipated to be on par with or even exceed that amount, despite her resignation following the controversy.

During her tenure as president, Gay was receiving a $1 million salary. However, it remains unclear how much of that compensation she will continue to receive, considering her brief six-month stint as the university’s top administrator.

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik strongly criticized Harvard for allowing someone accused of serial plagiarism to remain on the faculty. Stefanik emphasized that such conduct would result in expulsion for students at Harvard and described the situation as absurd and unacceptable.

Harvard promptly appointed Provost Alan M. Garber, an alumnus and the university’s chief academic officer, as the interim president, effective immediately.
