Microsoft, Semafor to Create News Stories via AI

Microsoft has revealed a partnership with media platform Semafor and various news organizations to facilitate the integration of generative AI into content production for journalism.

Through these joint efforts, Microsoft aims to assist these organizations in developing and refining procedures and policies for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news gathering and business operations, as detailed in a blog post by the tech giant.

Semafor, in particular, is set to launch a breaking news feed called “Signals,” which journalists can utilize in conjunction with tools from OpenAI and Microsoft to deliver readers in-depth analysis and insights regarding breaking news stories.

The terms of the agreement, including financial details, were not disclosed. This collaboration comes as Microsoft, along with OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT), faces a lawsuit filed by The New York Times over the unauthorized use of its published content for training AI technologies. Microsoft and OpenAI assert that using copyrighted materials for training AI products falls under the legal doctrine of “fair use.”

Additionally, Microsoft has announced similar collaborations with news organizations such as the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, the Online News Association, and the GroundTruth Project, with the aim of exploring ways to incorporate generative AI into their newsrooms and work.
