NATO Considering Shooting Down Russian Missiles

After a Russian missile briefly crossed into its airspace, NATO ally Poland is contemplating the possibility of intercepting any future Russian projectiles nearing its territory.

The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command (RSZ) disclosed that the missile traversed Polish airspace for about 39 seconds near Oserdow at 4:30 a.m. on a Sunday. The RSZ stated its air defense systems were primed for action and would have targeted the missile if it posed a direct threat to Polish soil.

In a conversation with RMF FM, a Polish radio broadcaster, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrzej Szejna remarked that the episode challenged the readiness and resolve of the Polish military, as reported by Newsweek.

Szejna mentioned, “NATO is contemplating various strategies, one of which includes the interception of such missiles when they loom near NATO’s frontiers. This, however, would necessitate Ukraine’s approval and consider the broader international ramifications.”

He elaborated that under this strategy, “NATO’s interceptors would engage Russian missiles outside the confines of the Alliance’s territories.” The minister underscored the gravity with which Poland regards the intimidations from Putin.

After this event, Poland requested a meeting with Sergey Andreev, the Russian envoy in Poland, to address the airspace breach. Andreev, however, sought additional proof before agreeing to the discussion.
