Netanyahu Says Rafah Invasion Soon, Biden Wrong

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that despite President Joe Biden’s warning, Israeli forces plan to enter the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. Biden had cautioned against such action, citing it as a “red line” due to concerns about civilian casualties.

In an interview with MSNBC broadcast on Saturday, Biden emphasized the importance of protecting innocent lives during the Israel-Hamas conflict and cautioned against an invasion of Rafah, fearing further Palestinian casualties.

However, Netanyahu asserted his own “red line” during an interview with Axel Springer, indicating a determination to proceed with the invasion to prevent a recurrence of past events. He dismissed calls for a ceasefire during Ramadan unless accompanied by a significant hostage release.

The conflict originated when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in numerous casualties and hostages. A recent UN report accused Hamas of committing atrocities, including rape and torture, during the initial assault.

Israel’s defensive actions have led to a significant number of Palestinian casualties and extensive damage to the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu stated that among those killed were thousands of “terrorists.”

Concerns have been raised by relief organizations about the potential for civilian casualties in Rafah, given its population density and proximity to Egypt.

Despite Biden’s opposition, Netanyahu claimed to have tacit support from several Arab leaders for the military operation against Hamas, whom they view as part of the Iranian terror network.

Netanyahu suggested that the conflict could soon conclude, citing significant progress in neutralizing Hamas’s capabilities. He reiterated his rejection of a Palestinian state, emphasizing the Israeli public’s support for this stance.

In addition, Netanyahu criticized European insistence on a two-state solution, arguing that Palestinian refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state is a significant barrier to peace.
