Pence Lauds Speaker’s ‘Moral Courage’ on Foreign Aid Bill

Former Vice President Mike Pence recently praised House Speaker Mike Johnson for his decision to advance separate aid packages for Ukraine, Israel, and Indo-Pacific allies, despite facing substantial opposition within his party and the looming threat of being removed from his position.

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Pence remarked on the difficulties Johnson faces with a slim majority. He described Johnson’s actions as exhibiting “moral courage,” and noted that Johnson is trusting the process and the American people by moving forward with what he believes is right despite the challenges.

This move by Johnson, however, has not been without its detractors within the GOP. Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Thomas Massie, and Paul Gosar have shown support for efforts to oust Johnson after the House, supported by some Democratic votes, passed the foreign aid package without including border security measures.

Pence also addressed concerns about a shift towards what he termed “Republican isolationism,” attributing this shift to recent national challenges like the situation at the southern U.S. border, inflation, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He argued that the nation’s issues shouldn’t prevent it from addressing global challenges and maintaining leadership on the world stage.

Pence emphasized the capabilities of the United States to manage domestic issues while also asserting its international leadership, reflecting on his administration’s approach to national security and foreign policy, including military actions and alliances.
