Pope Francis: End to ‘Spiral of Violence’ in Mideast

Pope Francis called on Iran and Israel on Sunday to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions and potentially lead to further violence in the Middle East.

Addressing pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope expressed his deep concern over reports of Iran’s recent drone and missile strike on Israel.

“I appeal sincerely for an end to any actions that may escalate into a cycle of violence, risking to draw the Middle East into even greater turmoil,” he said.

The Pope emphasized the importance of respecting the existence of others and urged all nations to work towards peace, advocating for a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist peacefully.

He also called for a ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid for its people, and efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas since the October 7 attack.

“Enough war, enough attacks, enough violence. Let us embrace dialogue and pursue peace,” he concluded.
