Report: Israel Approved, Then Nixed, Strike on Iran

Israel’s war cabinet initially authorized its military to proceed with a retaliatory strike against Iran following the recent drone and missile attacks. However, the decision was postponed later on for what Israeli officials described as “operational reasons,” according to reports from Axios citing Israeli sources.

This delay marks the second time the decision on retaliation has been deferred since the attacks by Iran over the weekend. Iran reportedly issued warnings against Israel, threatening to use previously unused weaponry if Israel were to retaliate.

The United States officials expressed uncertainty about the timing and proximity of a potential Israeli attack, with one official stating that Israel informed the Biden administration of its decision to wait on Monday.

There are concerns within the Biden administration that even a limited Israeli strike inside Iran could provoke a retaliatory response from Iran. However, officials hope that any Iranian retaliation would be less severe than the initial attack on Israel, thereby avoiding an escalation of hostilities between the two countries.

Key Israeli military figures, including Gen. Hertzi Halevi and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, are reportedly advocating for a response. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Aryeh Deri, the leader of the ultra-orthodox Shas party, are adopting a more cautious approach.

Deri emphasized that Israel is currently facing significant challenges, including the conflict in Gaza, a hostage crisis, and tensions in the north. Therefore, he suggested focusing on addressing existing issues rather than escalating the situation further.

Netanyahu recently met with the foreign ministers of the U.K. and Germany, reaffirming Israel’s commitment to defending itself against Iran. He indicated that Israel would respond to the Iranian attack but emphasized the importance of a measured and deliberate approach.

During the meeting, Netanyahu emphasized the need to conclude the conflict with Hamas in Gaza, highlighting its potential impact on weakening Iran’s ability to threaten Israel. However, some observers noted a lack of urgency from Netanyahu in addressing the situation.
