Earlier reports indicated that at least two armed groups based in Ukraine, purportedly comprising Russians opposed to the Kremlin, claimed responsibility for launching an incursion across Russia’s western border. However, Reuters could not independently verify the accounts provided by either side.
According to the Russian defense ministry, the attacks occurred at approximately 3 a.m. Moscow time (0000 GMT) and involved the use of tanks and armored personnel carriers to target multiple locations on the Russian side of the border. Russian troops responded by employing missiles, artillery, and air forces to repel the incursions.
