Sen. Mark Warner: Ukraine Will Get ATACMS Soon

Senator Mark Warner, representing Virginia and chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, delved into the details of the $61 billion aid package earmarked for Ukraine during an appearance on “Face the Nation” aired on April 21, 2024, as reported by CBS News.

Warner outlined the aid package, which not only encompasses significant investment in the U.S. industrial base but also aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression, particularly emphasizing the acquisition of crucial long-range artillery systems like ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System).

In his conversation with Margaret Brennan, Warner underscored the pressing need to furnish Ukraine with additional equipment promptly, commending their resilience and battlefield performance. “The next best time is right now, this week,” Warner asserted, stressing the urgency of immediate action.

Highlighting Ukraine’s achievements in neutralizing a substantial portion of Russian ground forces without incurring American casualties, Warner emphasized the efficacy of the support extended by the U.S. and its allies.

Warner expressed optimism that once the aid package secures presidential approval, the expedited delivery of equipment, including ATACMS artillery systems, would significantly bolster Ukrainian morale and their ability to confront Russian forces.

Addressing concerns about China’s role in supporting Russia’s defense industrial base, Warner acknowledged the complexities posed by countries like China, India, Iran, and North Korea.

While recognizing the inadequacies of the existing sanctions regime, particularly China’s direct military support to Russia and India’s procurement of Russian oil, Warner stressed the necessity of the aid package not only for Ukraine’s defense but also for broader national security interests, including support for Israel and humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.

“We must remain prepared to safeguard our national security interests, extending beyond Ukraine and Russia to encompass military aid for Israel and additional humanitarian support for Palestinians facing significant challenges,” he affirmed.
