Shippers Expect Increased US Port Congestion Due to Red Sea Crisis

On Friday, the Department of Transportation reported that participants in the U.S. shipping sector communicated during a recent discussion with the department’s Office of Multimodal Freight, predicting a potential uptick in congestion at certain U.S. container ports within the upcoming four to six weeks. This anticipated increase in congestion is attributed to shippers diverting their cargo to bypass the Red Sea.

This exchange of insights occurred during a Thursday call with the department, specifically addressing the complications for supply chains arising from recent disturbances in the Red Sea. These disruptions have been caused by attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels, impacting maritime operations in the area.
