Zelenskyy Weighs Firing Top General, Seeking a ‘Necessary’ War ‘Reset’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is contemplating a significant leadership shakeup that includes the potential dismissal of General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the country’s esteemed commander-in-chief of the armed forces. This move, while aiming to rejuvenate Ukraine’s leadership and ensure a unified commitment to victory against Russia, has sent shockwaves through the nation and raised concerns among Western allies.

In a recent interview with Italian broadcaster RAI TV, Zelenskyy confirmed his consideration of Zaluzhnyi’s removal, emphasizing the need for a fresh start and realignment of the country’s leadership. He clarified that this potential change goes beyond a single individual and encompasses multiple state leaders, transcending various sectors, including the military.

Zelenskyy’s acknowledgment of Zaluzhnyi’s possible dismissal has sparked controversy within Ukraine and has been met with approval from the Kremlin as the war enters its second year. General Zaluzhnyi is widely admired among Ukrainian service members and is celebrated as a national hero. He played a pivotal role in halting Russia’s full-scale invasion during the early stages of the conflict and effectively repelling Moscow’s forces.

Critics, such as Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko, have voiced concerns about Zaluzhnyi’s potential removal, citing the trust that many Ukrainians place in the armed forces due to his leadership. However, this development underscores the growing tensions between Zaluzhnyi and President Zelenskyy, particularly in the aftermath of an unsuccessful Ukrainian counteroffensive launched in June, supported by Western weaponry.

Amidst these challenges, Ukraine grapples with ammunition and personnel shortages while facing relentless attacks from Russia. Disagreements between Zelenskyy and Zaluzhnyi regarding the need for a broad mobilization to bolster Ukrainian troop numbers have contributed to their strained relationship. Zelenskyy’s decision to reject the military’s request to mobilize up to 500,000 people has added to the discord.

Zaluzhnyi’s earlier acknowledgment, in an interview with The Economist, that the conflict with Russia had reached a stalemate exacerbated tensions, with President Zelenskyy vehemently denying this assessment. The general has also outlined his vision for Ukraine to achieve victory in published essays, emphasizing the importance of air superiority, efficient countermeasures against enemy artillery, building reserves, and enhancing electronic warfare capabilities.

The situation is further complicated by Ukraine’s urgent need for increased Western military assistance, especially as Russian forces mount offensives along the 1,500-kilometer (900-mile) frontline. However, an aid package remains stalled in the U.S. Congress. The potential dismissal of General Zaluzhnyi adds uncertainty to the situation and could impact Western allies’ support.

Russia has expressed satisfaction at the prospect of Zaluzhnyi’s removal, suggesting that it reveals internal divisions within the Ukrainian leadership. Reports also indicate that President Zelenskyy is considering the removal of General Staff Chief Serhii Shaptala. Amid these challenges, Ukraine faces a critical phase in its ongoing conflict with Russia, with an uncertain path forward.
