This Scheme Could End Hamas Soon?

IDF International Spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, in an interview with The Media Line on Thursday, discussed the ongoing conflict in Gaza against the Hamas group, including efforts to rescue hostages and reports of the IDF taking measures against the tunnels used by Hamas.

Conricus emphasized that the current conflict is expected to be a lengthy and challenging one, echoing the sentiments of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. He stated that dismantling Hamas would require significant time and effort, but the IDF is resolute in its commitment to defeating the group, emphasizing that there are no other options.

Regarding reports of the IDF flooding the tunnels in Gaza, Conricus did not explicitly confirm this action in the interview. However, he indicated that these tunnels could potentially be Hamas’s downfall.

He mentioned that the IDF is conducting tests on tunnels where no hostages are believed to be held, as reported in U.S. news media. Conricus also highlighted the complexity of the tunnel system, revealing that the IDF has discovered an extensive network, including hundreds of miles of tunnels and tunnel shafts. Some of these tunnels are sophisticated and well-equipped, containing weapons, explosives, rocket launchers, and other munitions.

Conricus criticized Hamas for prioritizing military capabilities over the development of civilian infrastructure in Gaza, stating that they have focused on tunnels and weapons procurement instead of improving the lives of civilians.

Regarding the Israeli and foreign hostages held in Gaza, Conricus stressed the IDF’s determination to bring them home, even if it involves risky tactical operations. He acknowledged the challenges in rescuing the hostages and mentioned that turning the tunnels into a liability for Hamas is part of the IDF’s strategy.

In response, Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan, speaking from Lebanon, downplayed the reports of tunnel flooding, stating that the tunnels were designed to withstand various threats, including water pumping. He emphasized that tunnels are integral to their resistance efforts, and they have prepared for potential attacks.
