Netanyahu Defends Response to Hamas Attack, ‘Victory Within Reach’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stands firm in defense of Israel’s actions in Gaza, despite criticism from President Joe Biden, who labeled the response as “over the top.” Netanyahu, in an interview aired on ABC News, emphasized that Israel’s operations target “terrorists” while striving to ensure the safety of civilian populations, particularly in Rafah as they prepare for further action.

Netanyahu asserted that victory is attainable and rebuffed Biden’s remarks regarding Israel’s retaliation to the October 7th attack by Hamas. “Consider Israel’s position,” he urged, highlighting the unprovoked and deadly assault on October 7th, which he described as the most severe attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust. He defended Israel’s response, emphasizing efforts to target terrorists while minimizing harm to civilians, whom he accused Hamas of using as shields.

Addressing claims from Gaza’s Ministry of Health regarding casualties and displacement, Netanyahu expressed skepticism, cautioning against relying solely on Hamas-provided statistics. He claimed that Israel has significantly reduced the civilian-to-terrorist casualty ratio, citing estimates of over 20,000 Hamas militants killed or wounded, including thousands of fighters.

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to limiting civilian casualties while preventing Hamas from claiming victory, warning of the repercussions of allowing the Iran-backed terror group to succeed. Despite efforts by the Biden administration to broker a temporary ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian aid, Netanyahu affirmed that Israel will not allow Hamas to prevail.

Netanyahu’s steadfast stance comes amidst strained relations with the Biden administration, with no communication between the two leaders since Biden’s criticism of Israel’s military actions.
